Yaz Settlements May Be Increasing

Yaz lawsuits are being consolidated to a special federal Multi-District Litigation (MDL) court in Illinois.  Steve Maher is a court appointed Yaz MDL Attorney.

Bayer, the manufacturer of Yaz may be stepping up efforts to resolve claims against Yaz and Yasmin birth control.  The most recent Bayer shareholder report indicates that Bayer has resolved close to 3,500 Yaz lawsuits so far, totaling almost $750 million, making the average total per case nearly $214,000 which is higher than the original $212,000 per case.

At this point, Bayer is only settling claims involving blood clot injuries, such as DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) and Pulmonary Embolism.

Yaz and Yasmin contain a synthetic hormone known as “Drospirenone”.  Drospirenone has been linked to DVT and Pulmonary Embolism, causing the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists to add a new warning to said birth control pills  - stating that women taking these birth control pills “may have a higher risk of blood clots.”

Anyone who suffered a blood clot, DVT, stroke or Pulmonary Embolism after taking Yaz or Yasmin is strongly urged to contact a court appointed MDL attorney.

Yaz and Yasmin

Yaz

What is Yaz

Yaz is birth control that comes in pill form, it contains a synthetic hormone called “Drospirenone”.  Yaz is also sold under the brand names – Yasmin, Yasminelle, Beyaz, Ocella, Zarah, and Angeliq, all of these birth control pills are combination products of drospirenone with an estrogen such as ethinylestradiol.

Women taking or who have taken birth control pills that contain drospirenone have a sevenfold risk of developing blood clots compared to women who take birth control pills that contain levonorgestrel (a synthetic progestogen).

Even though Yasmin was the first birth control pill to contain drospirenone, when Yaz hit the U.S. market In 2006 it quickly became one of the most popular froms of birth control.

Bayer (the manufacturer of Yaz) marketed Yaz as a treatment for acne and PMS (premenstrual syndrome), making it appealing to women seeking answers to these problems.  (Later, Yasminelle, Beyaz, Ocella, Zarah, and Angeliq quickly followed suit.) Although the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) did not approve Yaz as a treatment for acne and PMS, it approved Yaz as a form of oral contraceptive (birth control pill), as a treatment for PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder) and to help treat moderate acne.  According to the FDA, Bayer marketed Yaz incorrectly by wrongly suggesting that Yaz was approved to treat PMS and acne at any level of severity.  The FDA also accuses Bayer of downplaying the risks that Yaz posed.

Today there are more than 10,000 U.S. patients who have filed lawsuits against Bayer Pharmaceuticals, making it necessary to appoint multi-district legislation (MDL) attorneys to handle all of the Yaz cases.

Yaz and Yazmin (Yasmin)

Yaz and Yazmin (Yasmin) are oral contraceptives (birth control pills) manufactured by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceutical

Yasmin and Yaz are oral contraceptives (birth control pills) manufactured for the prevention of pregnancy.  Yasmin was approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in 2001, Yaz was approved by the FDA in 2006.  Yaz and Yasmin prevent pregnancy by combining estrogen and a synthetic progestin known as “drospirenone”.

Drospirenone is a dangerous drug.  According to the FDA birth control pills containing drospirenone may be associated with a significantly higher risk of blood clots or DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) than birth control pills that do not contain drospirenone.  Since blood clots move through the body, there may be a threefold increased risk for heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism and even death due to DVT.

Women who are otherwise completely healthy, have experienced injuries and side effects after taking Yaz, Yasmin or Ocella.  In fact, Yasmin and Yaz have been linked to fifty deaths and hundreds of injuries.

Yaz and Yasmin lawsuit settlements have reached $402 million, Bayer AG pays out an average of $212 thousand per Yaz and Yasmin case, and has put aside a reserve of $610.5 million to settle Yaz and Yasmin cases.

What Is Beyaz?

Beyaz-yaz-yasmin-ocella-dangerous drugs / The Maher Law Firm / Frank Eidson Attorney At Law

Beyaz is an oral contraceptive manufactured by Bayer

Beyaz is made of several ingredients including ethinylestradiol, and estrogen and drospirenone a synthetic progestogen, which makes it a “combined oral contraceptive”.  Beyaz was approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) on September 24th 2010.

One of the key ingredients in Beyaz called ‘Drospirenone’ is a synthetic, steroidal progestin that prevents ovulation, (the release of an egg from an ovary) which causes changes in your cervical and uterine lining.

Drospirenone has been linked with a possible increased risk of blood clots, making it more likely to cause blood clots than other types of birth control pills. Drospirenone can be found in many types of birth control pills (oral contraceptives) including Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella.  If you smoke, you increase your risk of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack caused by birth control pills.

Blood Clots, also known as DVT (Deep Vein thrombosis) can be a dangerous condition which may result in:

Heart Attack - When a blood clot travels to the heart it can cause a heart attack
Stroke – When a blood clot travels to the brain it can cause a stroke
Pulmonary Embolism – When a blood clot travels to the lungs it causes PE (Pulmonary Embolism)
Death – When any of the above occur the conditions may be fatal

Beyaz and any other birth control pill containing drospirenone are dangerous drugs that have serious side effects including, but not limited to:

Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
Hives
Difficulty breathing
Numbness of the body
Headaches – including migraine headaches
Chest pain
Nausea
Breast Lumps
Depression
Darkening of facial skin
Vaginal discharge
Decreased sex drive
